Needle Exchange in Kentucky

The needle-trade program for heroin clients begins this Friday, September ninth.

The system will be available on Fridays from 1:30-4 p.m. at The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department, situated at 650 Newtown Pike.

The free, mysterious and classified system is intended to decrease the spread of HIV and hepatitis in Lexington.

The Bluegrass Region, which covers 17 districts including Fayette County, has seen HIV numbers develop from 75 cases in 2011 to 107 in 2013.

Dr. Rice Leach, Lexington's Commissioner of Health, says he doesn't think the project empowers illicit action with respect to the client.

"I'm doing general wellbeing and I know it helps general wellbeing," said Dr. Drain. "I'm not mindful of any proof that demonstrates to it exacerbates the medications use issue."

Numerous organizations in Fayette County have gotten on board to demonstrate their backing for the needle-trade including AVOL, the Lexington Police and Fire offices, Baptist Health and various others.

The main prerequisite for people needing to exploit the needle trade is that they get messy needles to be swapped for clean ones.

There's no obligatory screening for transferrable illnesses like HIV a Hepatitis.

We asked Dr. Drain if that could be a probability later on.

He said in view of meetings with previous medication clients, joining these sorts of strings would be unfavorable to the reason as of right now.

Dr. Filter says it's all in regards to setting up trust between the clients the wellbeing division is needing to come into exploit the system.

There will be trying and medication treatment alternatives accessible to any clients who are intrigued, he says.
